California wildfire damage adding up

The recent wildfires that have spread throughout California have now been called the worst wildfires to cross the region's history. The numbers are staggering in loss of life, homes, vehicles, land, infrastructure and more. The tragic loss of life in these fires is adding up as families still search for loved ones and find serious, hard realities.

The Los Angeles Times reported the rising loss numbers on October 31, including:

  • Over 40 deaths
  • 14,000+ fire-damaged or destroyed homes
  • More than 3,200 vehicles wrecked

Current damage estimates of over $3 billion have been reported. This estimate, however, only includes property damage.

Property damages include a variety of things such as:

  • Personal possessions
  • Homes
  • Schools
  • Vehicles
  • Businesses
  • Land

In addition to the fire damage, the aftermath of this disaster may bring injuries from toxic chemicals such as hazardous waste and chemical spills. Crumbling structures and fire-damaged homes also create dangerous situations.

These historic fires were reportedly caused by a downed power line from the Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E). As further news unfolds, other responsible parties may also come to light.

If you need medical help, many agencies are available such as the Red Cross, Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Fire Department. If you have claims questions or would like help sorting through legal issues after a loss, please contact us for assistance.

If you or your loved ones have been affected by this tragedy, we are sorry for your losses. We send our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
