San Jose Reaches 32nd Fatal Accident for 2015

Just last Monday, San Jose reported its 32nd fatal traffic accident for the year. That number reaches close to the yearly total for 2013 (40) and surpasses many of the previous yearly totals already. The accident took place early in the morning after a speeding Chevy Tahoe hit a curb, rolled over, and ejected the driver. He was ruled dead at the scene. Another man who was in the vehicle had to be taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Police ruled that speed was a serious factor in the fatal crash that took place around 2:30 a.m. The rollover happened on the connector ramp between southbound Almaden Expressway and westbound Capital Expressway. The on-going investigation found that the vehicle was going at such as high speed that the driver couldn't adjust to the curve of the road.

Leading Causes of Traffic Fatalities

Traffic-related fatalities are a serious problem in the Bay Area. According to statistics, nearly 500 car accidents occurred here in a recent year, which included the areas of San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. San Francisco County led the way with an estimated 108 accidents. Sadly, many of the accidents and collisions in the area led to fatalities.

Among the leading causes for fatal traffic accidents includes:

  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding or other traffic violations
  • Driving while under the influence
  • Texting or talking on the phone
  • Night time / lack of visibility
  • Tire blowouts or road conditions
  • Drowsy driving
  • Harsh weather

Sadly, many fatal accidents could have been prevented if another driver simply acted more cautiously when behind the wheel. In many cases, a person simply being distracted or taking their eyes off the road can lead to a devastating accident. When these accidents cause the wrongful death of another, the negligent driver may be held accountable.

The Importance of Paying Attention to the Road

According to studies, engaging in any types of sub-tasks related to cellular devices that take your mind off the road can increase your chances of being in an accident three-fold. That includes simply reaching for a phone or dialing a number. Any visual, manual, or cognitive action that takes your eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, or mind off of driving can lead to a deadly collision. That is why it is so important that drivers remain sharp and aware behind the wheel.

Driving a motor vehicle is a privilege, not a right. When an individual earns their driver's license, they are agreeing to abide by certain rules and traffic laws. However, in cases where their behavior or actions violate these laws, they can face serious consequences. Distracted driving has been cited as the source of 3,154 deaths and 424,000 injuries that occurred in 2013.
