Caltrain Hits Two in First Fatal Accident of 2014

In a horrific accident on Monday night, one person was killed and another severely injured after being struck by Caltrain near the Santa Clara stop. The train, an express commuter train that was not planned to stop at that particular station, was estimated to have been moving somewhere between 50 and 70 mph when it hit the two pedestrians on the tracks. Authorities are still investigating the accident, and have said that they hope to question the survivor when his condition improves in order to ascertain why the two people were on the tracks in the first place.

Marin Approves $9.4 Million Bike Path for Ferry Building

Regular Larkspur ferry commuters know how many cyclists ride their bikes to the ferry terminal each morning. What they may not know is just how difficult it can be to access the terminal on a bicycle. There are bike paths in the area, including the convenient Cal Park tunnel, but none of them connect directly to the biggest transportation hub in the city of Larkspur.

Lyft and Uber Face Scrutiny for Accidents

The sharing economy is booming here in San Francisco, and city-dwellers with and without cars are increasingly relying upon ride-share companies such as Lyft and Uber to get around. These ride-share companies have undeniable appeal: for reasonable prices, customers are able to consolidate resources while having a genuine interaction with a reliable driver.

New Details Emerge About San Rafael Pedestrian Accident

Authorities have released more information about last Friday's fatal accident in San Rafael, which I blogged about earlier this week. It seems the second victim and survivor of this terrible accident is 68-year-old Mr. Guillermo Lopez-Cumez. Although he sustained serious injuries and has been in the hospital since being struck by a dump truck in downtown San Rafael, the Marin IJ reports that, fortunately, he is now in stable condition.

Sleep Deprivation or Fatigue Can Cause Catastrophic Injury or Death

Pilots are limited by law to flying a set number of hours weekly. Truck drivers are similarly regulated. The reason: the potential of falling asleep at their jobs places the lives of others in jeopardy. Here in the Bay Area, Silicon Valley workers often find themselves in an environment where they are responding to emails or texts from their employers at all hours of the day and night, trying to keep up with the demands of their job. These unrealistic expectations result in many employees working late and driving home, sometimes just to work more there. This is a recipe for disaster.

Pedestrian Fatality Underscores High Accident Rates

This past Friday, a horrific pedestrian accident near the San Rafael Transit Center took the life of one and seriously injured another. According to the Marin IJ, Olga Rodriguez of Novato and another unidentified male were crossing the street near the Marin County bus station around noon when a dump truck reportedly hit them both in the middle of the street. Ms. Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other victim was rushed off to the hospital with critical injuries.
